Tangentially: y'all quit making fun of the word y'all. It fulfills a necessary function in the English language: it's a plural form of the word "you". "Y'all" is NOT SINGULAR. It stands for "you all", and no self-respecting Texan would ever use it to refer to a single person. So y'all just shaddap.
And it's NOT "ya'll" either. It's "y'all". Don't make me come over there.

Yes, having an unambigious plural for "you" *is* useful. Unfortunate that it isn't considered standard English, it truly is. It would make some things much easier to express precisely. I usually settle for "you people"...

As a Californian, I probably wouldn't survive the night if I ever said 'y'all'. So I get to say 'you guys' instead. Or 'you people' if 'you guys' protests that they are in fact girls.

Damn right. Y'all has become standard just because of it's use. I say y'all in upper division english and history classes, and no one bats a lash.
Y'all is so definately necessary! We could not live without it.

Hey, I like "y'all", though I only use it in informal writing, like message boards and such... Definitely more euphonious than our local version, which is "yunz". Uh-huh. Exactly how it looks. O_o

hrm, well I only use it in emails or chats or that type of thing. it is useful, but when I pronounce it it my head/use it it has no attachment to a southern accent.... :P
